Pursuing your passion is an exciting and enjoyable time. Although we hold our hobbies in high esteem, even your favorite past time can run into roadblocks. Running into challenges while trying to participate in the things we love is exceptionally frustrating. A lack of time, energy, organization, supplies or any number of circumstances can discourage us from taking part in our beloved interests. 

 Maintaining motivation to see past the difficulties that may find us while we indulge in our recreational activities is the key that keeps our hobbies fun and not laborious. Finding this motivation and maintaining it can break cycles of stagnation, develop new enthusiasm, and provide another perspective to the activities you enjoy. Developing the motivation that not only surpasses challenges but welcomes them adds depth to the relationship you have with your passion.

 This motivation can be exercised with seven of our favorite tips, starting with:

1. Remember why you started the activity in the first place by reminiscing about the feeling of accomplishment. Recognize that tapping into that feeling of achievement is always accessible even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.
2. Question if the activity itself is the problem or is it an issue outside of the hobby that needs to be focused on. Sometimes we begin to relate our passions negatively, not because of the activity itself, but because of surrounding circumstances. Don’t allow the challenge to ruin your favorite activity.
3. 3. Pursue a community of like-minded people who enjoy the activities you like. There are many people who may have run into the same difficulties you’re running into. Don’t feel ostracized by your challenges and explore online forums, Facebook groups or communities like Cultivate Your Enthusiasm™️ to introduce you to potential friends and networks. These networks may have solutions to the challenges you’re running into and provide some fun to your hobby.

 4.Recognize each experience within your hobby will be different regardless of how many times you’ve done it. For example, rebuilding a car may be your favorite activity but each car you rebuild will be different, have different needs and perform differently. Instead of comparing your latest car rebuilding endeavor to the last one become enthusiastic about starting something new and recognize the new car will only enrich your mechanical skill.

5.Remember your hobby is a leisure activity for a reason, don’t force your process to move faster than necessary. Patience is still a virtue even if it’s with something you’re familiar with.

6.Don’t become obsessive over the activity in question. It’s understandable to have a love for your favorite escape, but too much of anything can be a bad thing. Maintain balance between your passions to alleviate some of the pressure of the hobby to make it gratifying instead of all-consuming.

7.Define what a successful project looks like to you instead of comparing it to the success of someone else’s. In our social media dominated society, we tend to compare our hobbies with one another instead of relating to one another through those hobbies. Comparing your work to someone else’s can easily be discouraging. You must remember your own definition of success and recognize it might not look like anyone else’s and that’s fine because your passion belongs to you.

Ultimately, don’t allow feeling unmotivated to be end of your love for your hobby. Our hobbies and interests are important to add enthusiasm and excitement to our day to day lives.
